Hi all, just bought a t25 1.6d yesterday drove it home nearly 300 miles without any problems, but i want to give the engine a good service but have absolutely no idea how or what ill need with regards to belts ,plugs, oil etc. Just wanted to know if this is some thing a complete newbie could take on as in wanting to learn whilst keeping costs down, also been trying to find a workshop manual but have had no luck so far. Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
Carl

Parts: standard service.
Diesel oil
Oil Filter
Sump Bung washer
Diesel Filter
Air Filter
Cam cover gasket and end seals
Antifreeze (check strength)

You will be able to drop the oil & filter & refill (warm engine to drain)
Replace the diesel filter (filling the new filter with clean diesel before fitting)
But the cam cover removal & tappet adjustment needs specialized tools and shims to adjust clearances.
Air filter, old one out, clean box, fit new.....easy.

Check the drive belts for wear/cracking replace if needed.
Check the cambelt for wear/cracking...again specialized.

just had a quick look through wiki, thanks for letting me know. the specialist jobs with timing belt etc, are they usually quite pricey? i have literaly spent all my money getting the bus, but will have to get these things done anyway but just want a heads up. Also do any of you guys know why my heaters are blowing warm air and not hot?thanks again

The Cam Belt change is only every 60K (5 years) or so. It may have been changed so just have a quick look to estimate it's condition.
Tappet adjustments a funny one....supposed to be every main service but once set correctly normally stay within tollerance for 20/30K....only trouble is they rarely get checked so could be way out.

Heaters not getting hot....hmm, could be a few things:
Someone has removed the thermostat.
Cable has come off the heater control valve/flap control.
Air lock...although normally they just stay cold.

Only thing i would really question is the cam belt , the o/p is unlikely to know wether its good or not,
my advicer is unless you have a receipt for its change then assume it needs one, anyhow thayts what i do with every oikler i buy

Thanks for all the info, im really trying to take as much of this in as i can, I think the best option is to put it in a proper garage for the first full service,an bite the bullet an dust the credit card off!! IM in Middlesbrough,do any of you guys know a good place i can take her to? Cheer's

And of course...we are only talking about engine servicing and clearly brakes, suspension, steering, wheels/tyres, lights, levels will all need a good looking at as well.
Certainly helps if you can 'break the back' of the jobs yourself as it's going to be a very expensive game sending it to the garage for every last thing.

An option would be to pay for a 'lube service, check and report' ...have them do the difficult bits and armed with a list, you can work your way through the remainder.
See what the garage turns up first.
