I have a 1989 VW T3 which is fitted with a 1.9 1Z diesel engine with a mechanical fuel pump and chargecooler.

The van has been under performing and one reason for the lack of power might be the repair to the mechanical pump which was done a while back here in Spain. When it was done the mechanic said that the faulty part was replaced with a part from a Ford transit???

I've searched the internet and the name Giles from Performance Diesel Injection based in Canada keeps coming up. I was wondering if anyone has either heard of him or had work carried out by him?

He charges 1,400 Canadian dollars (930 GBP) to modify a supplied pump or 2,100 Canadian dollars (1,395 GBP) for a complete pump. Does this sound expensive or is this the going rate?

£275, remanufactured. OK, it might not have a "name" behind it, but it's without the hassle of transatlantic shipping, and remember, you may well be hit for import duty and vat on one from Canada.

<E D I T> Just noticed you're in Spain, so might be easier to get one locally, but if you do end up getting from the UK, at least it's all EU, so no duty/tax hit. Just shipping.

Thanks for your quick reply. Please ignore my ignorance but is the item you suggested a mechanical pump. I read somewhere that a pump for a 1Z had to be modified in some way. If I'm wrong then you've saved me a lot of money.

<shrug> Gawd knows... I'm not really a fan of diseasels... It's merely a result that popped up on a quick search for a 1z pump.

Rob who built the pump originally ? IIRC Russel used Yager a couple of times, and someone in the states, and I think Andy Simpson did one for him - Jake syncro101 is running mTDi of that era that passed through Russel's hands he might be able to help with advice
Or get Andy's TDi upgrade and AFN head and go electronic, more power probably cheaper and with obd and ready availability of parts - this why most people have gone away from mechanical pumps because the only person who knows what's in it is the person who hybridised it - in the past no one wanted to do the wiring work and resolve the additional sensors properly but now it's been done that's the way most people are going now, if something goes wrong you can plug into diagnostics and hopefully sort it fairly straightforwardly

Thanks for the reply. I hope you are well and keeping busy. The gearbox you did for me is still going strong. Don't know who did the pump originally. As I mentioned before it was repaired by a local garage a while back and the van has been down on power since then. It's with Dave's at Futbus at the moment and I'll speak to him about a change to full electronic. I'm looking to do a trip to Africa sometime soon and I'm keen to keep it simple.

Done some more digging and this guy in Canada sounds likes the dogs. But as AdrianC says when you add VAT, import duty, etc, etc it does get expensive. Who in Europe would you reccommend to do the repair?

By the way are you going to Volksworld this year?

Get the loom off andy, and the get Elvis and Darren to fit it. It's a great loom, and was fitted properly by Elvis

Giles is very very well recommended, but as you have found he's expensive and the last time i knew anything about it he had a waiting list of about 3-4 months. Also there's the import duty as mentioned previously.

Iirc, the pump on your van is one of the ones made buy a guy stateside, not Giles. Cant remember the name of the bloke, but pretty sure its one of those.

Out of interest, has your van been behaving badly ever since it was fiddled with in Spain? or has this developed since then? I'm just interested as to whether it could be something else causing the issue?

If you do decide to go electronic, then Elvis and Darren at Wedgies Workshop will sort you out, they've installed a few of Andy's looms into various vans including Lloyd's & southern sparkys, everyone is very happy with the work as far as i know.

Can anyone tell me the overall cost of the conversion?

Rob, you would be looking at around £300 for the loom and then you've got all the other switches, valves, adaptors, turbo, mounts etc etc.

I don't know what the full cost gets to as i went down the Mtdi route as you know, but i'm sure someone who's done an etdi will be along with a better idea....

Go for 300 mechanical landy pump ? Its more or less bolt on and cheap and plentiful A quick search of gtd and the net will pop up what needs to be done for the install
