Hi all, newbie looking for some advice from the engine-jedi

So I've got an issue with my bus that is occasionally losses power. I'll be driving along, engine all warmed up, and suddenly it splutters and dies. Wait 10 seconds, restart, and drive off with no problem. Then it'll be fine for a week or two before it dies again.

Its got to be either air or petrol hasn't it really? So far I've ...

* Changed the air filter
* Disconnected the air filter from the body vent (in case there is a blockage in the hose)
* Sprayed loads of carb cleaner into the carb
* Changed the main fuel filter
* Checked all the air lines
* and Changed plugs, leads, dizzy cap, and rotor

All that's left as far as I can see is the in-line fuel filter in the carb, fuel pump, or the expensive looking black box of electronics. I'm going to clean the fuel filter this weekend. So ...

* Is it just a case of pulling the fuel hose off, pulling the filter out with a screw, cleaning it, and putting it back?
* When I pull off the fuel pipe can I expect a face full of petrol or should I clamp up the pipe first?

Any other pointers greatly received

if that doesn't help, then it's time to turn your attention to the
a. fuel pump
b. air leaks

Cleaned it out today (after much wag induced delay) ... well who'd of thought there'd be so much sand in my fuel line? I was in half a mind to not put it back in the carb after I'd cleaned it, but as it was so crudded up I decided I must be there for a reason.

Hi decker, how did you get the filter out? Was the carb still in place or had you taken it out of the van? I tried using a 3mm self tapping screw with carb still in place but couldn't seem to fish it out, or get a good view of what I was looking for, how far up the inlet pipe is it? Also, what is it made from?

Cheers
