tapping when under load

Can anyone shed any light on a tapping from the engine bay? It only occurs when driving under load ie with foot on the gas. When coasting theres no sound and when idling no sound?

The tapping is like metal on metal and happens whilst on the gas in all gears incl reverse?

I dont think this has any relevance but I have recently adjusted the accelerator cable.

Any help would be most gratefully appreciated.

Cheers, Greg

Does it sound a bit like rattling marbles in a jar? If so it could be 'pinking' or detonation, very bad news if it is! It's a sign of over advanced timing or a lean fuel mixture and goes hand in hand with overheating and some serious engine damage...

Hopefully it's something else, not sure adjusting the accelerator cable could cause this to suddenly start happening, unless you're only now getting full throttle?

To be fair if it was a diesel he wouldn't hear it for the agricultural sounds coming from the engine anyway....

Thanks fellers for all the info here. Ive made the school boy error of not telling you what van i have! So firstly, its a 1.9 petrol, caravelle.

Checked the cv joint on the driveshaft as Kevtherev suggested and there does seem to be a similar tapping sound when i give the left rear one a good jiggle, sounds like some ballbearings may have slipped. Therefore Im gonna change this first and keep my fingers crossed that this is the true cause

Will keep ya updated and once again, thankyou for taking the time to help

If you move the driveshaft from left to right vigorously a few times you may find it cures it for a few hundred miles, as it moves the grease around inside.....

And if you add your van details to your signature it will automatically be at the bottom of every post you make and have made, so no more crystal ball jokes!!
