fittin oversize tyres on the rear of a t3

i've got myself some 16" wheels for my t3 now to buy tyres for them
i was thinking it seems to go though 1st quick enough, and will pull away in second without too much effort, could i give myself a bit of an over drive by using bigger rear tyres

click on the thumbs
first, tyres on 16" to give the same'ish diameter

second. the next profile up would give me a whole 2 mph more

The prob is, you got to watch out that should you have a bump/accident, your Insurance company doesn't regard it as 'modified'. Insurance companies will look for ANY reason not to pay out.

i've told my insurance that the t3 will be modified along the way, they want to know and want money to adjust the paper work, but it won't affect my policy, they've said
so i'm going to together all the bits change it over in one go, so there's only one fee to pay



it'll have bigger wheels, an avo suspension kit and a few other bit's along the way, when funds allow :wink:

You can do this I have thought about this too....but be mindfull that the engine (1.9?) will be working harder up hill..in fact VW added a fifth gear to later models but top remained the same.

Whats the rush? ...your on holiday :wink:

bigger tyres mean you'll change up earlier.

syncros have bigger tyres as they need the traction for clearing obsticals

If it feels a bit undergeared now then up to 7% prob OK, but without more power or a better state of tune, you will be going down into 4th more often when windy or on slight gradients or when loaded.
If its got a hight op I wouldn't do it.

Speedos indicate from 3- 5 mph fast

And it aint nothing to do with traction, its to do with clearance. Good nobbly tyres are what are needed for traction. :wink:

check the 205/60/16 tyres out, standard size for speedo.
i put 215/65 /16 on the back of the auto,but have 1.9td engine so plenty of power.

the bus is 4 speed, 1.9 DG tin top and the speedo is almost dead on, i drive most everywhere with tom tom in view

just one other thing, after i go out and buy the bigger rear tyres, will i still be able to stick 60mm avo springs an stuff on it without chaifing
the rims are 7 1/2 x 16 ET 37
i've had the centers machined out already, also need to get longer bolts and studs

and finaly can anyone recomend locking nuts and studs, would i need to but 2 sets to get a nut type for the rear and the bolt type for the front

just doing the same thing at the mo. gone with 215/60 X 16 wheels. What size did you get the centres bored out to? Found any centre caps that will work?

If you want to sort a deal out where you have 2 of each type of locking nut/stud and I will buy the other half of the 2 sets off you PM me.

Only thing is, what make of alloys have you bought? Mine are VW originals that MUST have the radiused seat bolts/nuts, NOT the tapered seat type that most other wheel manufacturers use!

i'm using 7 1/6 x 16 audi wheels, i don't know if they are the ame as regard to the taper in the bolt
i had the centers opened out to 66mm, i think it's bigger than i need, since i had it done i've read that 64mm of OK
if you need bolts for the front asuming that audi and VW tapers are the same i have some spares as my wheels came with bolts for a ll 4 wheels

215/60's you'll harldy notice, it'll give you almost 2mph over all

(it`s still me, name changed slightly but still here)

You can get away with boring the front centres to 64mm, did mine yesterday. Not done the rears as there isn`t the clearance problem, figured I was unlikely to need to swap wheels about front to back anyway (still got a steel spare in the carrier)

Currently got the factory 205/70 X 14 Vanagon type alloy wheels, going to 215/60 X 16 on VW Sharan alloys, my calculator chart puts it at + 6.5 % up on the gearing, I think this will be slightly benificial.

Just fitted a 40mm drop kit today, springs and shocks. Waiting for the longer stud kit and locking nuts to arrive tomorrow (hopefully) so can get the new alloys on and finish the job. It`s surprising how much difference a 40mm drop makes, the `van looks a whole lot better already (IMHO) The slightly larger wheels will fill the arches a bit more, offered them up to the side earlier, look good :)

Will post a couple of pics, soon
