Yellow/red wire is coolant temp, this should go to a black sender (with a green stripe)
Blue /white wire is glow plugs and goes to the other black/green sender.
Brown/red wire is aux pump and goes to the black/yellow switch.
That's for late vans with 2 pin senders/switched.

Same wiring colour for early single pin senders/switches, obviously the aux pump switch is the odd one out and looks different so you can't really get it wrong.
Aux pump switch is on the side of the head, glow plugs usually tucked down the back.

They are pretty easy, there is a good guide in the Haynes.
Just remember that the bottom of the page is earth and the top of the page is the fusebox.

Read the din numbers on the brick-yard and you cant really go far wrong.

thanks think i have worked it out.
i found this wire lurking in the engine bay, when it is earthed a relay clicks behind the left rear light and a fan bursts in to life, is this wire to be connected to the sender between the injectors, (Thermoswitch for coolant circulation run-on circuit)?
also the run on pump has been removed (the pump is missing) and the hoses have been joined together and bypassed the pump. so the next question is the pump needed?

If it fires up the turbo cooling fan then yes it's the one that goes to the switch at the back of the head. The seals on my aux pump went when I overheated , might have been the same on yours in previous calamity , then not replaced but just cobbled together a bypass - probably by the same person who mixed and matched your injectors :) I think the tdi route can take the option of doing away with aux pump due to lower running temps
