lost 1st and 3rd gears

A quick gearbox problem.
I'm driving a 81 diesel t25 not turbocharged with original gearbox.
I was driving up and down some serious hills today... actually across the rift valley in Kenya. Fantastic cruise down one side, through the valley in the pouring rain and then up the escarpment to Nairobi. Third started playing hard to get on the flat.. But once in it worked just find. Discovered it needed pushing in then pulling back a bit and it worked. Once in it stayed in and stayed well, no slipping. Then driving through city traffic 1st and 3rd just died. Nothing. Got to where I had to with second gear the possible destruction of clutch.
After I pulled in I found if I push the lever real hard 1st will engage. Neutral feels too far forward. Reverse also hard to reach. Didn't mess around too much. Long drive. Too tired to look at it tonight.
If the gearbox is fried I'll have to get a scrap one. I have been avoiding that for years as the diesel box is really hard to find here.
It reminds me of when my linkage was all out of shape. Had some problems like that then. If anyone has any suggestions tonight I'd be delighted to hear them.
I'm thinking, that the selectors inside the box if damaged would affect 1st and 2nd in combo then 3rd and 4th as they go back and forth. So 1st and 2nd I'm guessing is a loose alignment. Hoping more like.
Thanks for your observations
