Hi

I have very slight side to side movement on the valves due to wearing of the guides but at the moment there is no witness marks on the head itself which is in remarkably good condition, however, is there an acceptable amount of play allowed before considering the replacement of the guides.

You do NOT want rock on exhaust valves/guides.

Worn valve guides increase oil consumption.

I have the tools here, but thats in France,,..

If heads crack free, then get them pressed out, new fitted, and reamed with the valves so that they move freely.

Fit at least new exhaust valves..

Maximum 1.2mm rock at the valve head with the valve stem flush with the top of the valve guide.

Cheers Big Herb, I thought a little bit of play would be acceptable, never consumed any oil before strip down and they are within tolerance, however one exhaust valve has a couple of slight cracks around the edge so I will replace it,

all in all the engine looks to have been reconditioned too a good level at some point as it has little carbon build up, liners and cylinders look like new, helicoils in holes, head mating surface are spot on and newish looking parts that are well within the tolerance. Only stripped for leak around water jacket seal (no obvious reason why) and an oil drip out of oil gallery core plug. Still managed to find out the clutch was on its final summer.
