the fuel filter is about 5cm in front of it and is probably 3 quarters full. the filter was replaced november time and still looks new

Noisy pump = needs replacing but before you do, just check the fuel lines aren't blocked and starving the pump of petrol (running dry). Also...just check the fuel pump fuse has good connections especially on older continental bullet fuse types (they can become loose and even melt in the holder).
Fuel starvation can happen when the tank is excessively corroded resulting in rust and other crap from the tank blocking the fuel lines. Do you smell petrol when you fill her to the brim...is the tank leaking at all?

AND?????????

Aircooled '82' CU 2 litre....didn't they all have mechanical pumps? and if they had electric pumps weren't they used in conjunction with a larger 'aluminium' type fuel filter? this setup doesn't sound right somehow!! I could be wrong of course.

Hi all good points thank you.
The set up is the one that was on the bus when i bought it end of december. It comes out the fuel tank into plastic fuel filter into the pump which then pumps to engine bay. It was all good untill it started making horrible noise and wouldnt start again. Will try and get out later to look at lines etc.

Like oldies says sounds more like the pump is empty. How much is in the tank, bellow a quarter? Is is parked on a slope or camper? If so stick another gallon or two in the tank first.

i added another 15 quids worth of fuel yesterday, and van is on level ground. have bought a new fuel filter just in case thats blocked, i agree it does sound like pump is empty but as far as i can see it would be getting fuel

Been out to van this afternoon and fitted new fuel filter, am i right in thinking the pump pulls fuel through the lines?? The filter didnt fill so a quick suck on fuel line and hey presto filled fuel filter.as i had all the lines disconnected i tried putting finger over end of the fuel pump while it was banging about, i felt no suction at all so i am guessing its the pump thats died, does this sound right??

The only other possibility is there is a leak in the pipe between the tank and the pump and it is sucking in air. Where is the pump mounted it should be close and level with the tank?
