Hi all,
Just got back from an evening at the beach but unfortunately while reversing I managed to smash my engine bar into a high kerb that I didn't see really REALLY hard...since then there's been a nasty rattle from the engine bay and it seems to judder sometimes while I'm driving!!
If anyone would have any idea as to what I've done I would be very grateful to hear any suggestions as always!!
Thanks
Gaz

Sorry to tell you that the old crystal balls are not working here!
What engine ?
Obvious answer is you have broken a engine mount and the engine is hanging ?

The engine mount looks ok, is it possible that I've cracked the case where it bolts to the engine bar?!

It's much more likely you have busted a rubber mount ,they won't have liked the bar twisting .
Also check your gearbox nose mount , it's the other end of the mounting triangle

Thanks Steve, just taken her out for a spin and all seems ok bar the exhaust now blowing badly and vibrating from where the pipe exits the flange (the reason for the noise and lumpy feeling)...no leaking oil, the engine runs completely flat and doesn't vibrate, I suspect I was thinking the worst!!
A new exhaust was next on the list for the van once my Fasty resto is complete in a couple of weeks!!
I'll check all the rubber mounts but thankfully I think I've got away incredibly lightly!!
Thanks again

A good used bar with mounts will cost you about £40 but at the end of the day you cannot 'guess' the damage, you really do need to get the back end up and have a close look.
Engine mountings can 'appear' to be fine, as in a 'relaxed unstressed state' the weight of the engine pushes them together.
You might need to jack up the engine (with a block of wood to spread the load) before you can see that the mountings have come apart.

Thanks Martin,
I've had the back up and given everything a good once over with a friend and everything seems fine...I've temporarily repaired the exhaust until my new one arrives and the van drives perfectly again!!
It would seem I've been very lucky...more care and attention in future!!
Thanks for all the replies

P.S. the CSP stainless exhausts offered by vw heritage and coolair state that they are suitable for Aircooled vans with a type 4 engine and DG wasserboxers...is this the case, and if so does the kit include everything I would need?!

That will be only a early DG , later ones don't share the air cooled silencer
Brickwerks do the later Ss systems
Maybe you should add the age and details of your van to your signature to save us all time? .
