Hi all.

I have got what I believe to be sticky tappets and the noise is driving me nuts.

I've had a good look through the forum on this issue and it blows my mind. I'm going to run some hydraulic cleaner through it this afternoon followed by changing the oil.

If this fails to clear it is it something that i can adjust myself with basic tools and if so does any one have any pictures they can post? if the answer to that question is a "no" then so be it I'll have to find a garage for that.

Some one has said that if they need replacing then the engine needs to be completly taken apart as they are mushroom shaped and fitted from the inside but then someone else said that that was only on the 1600 Aircooled. My engine is a 1.9 water cooled.
Am I looking at an expenseive solution here or are there other means.

I wouldn't bother with the "Hydraulic cleaner" By all means change the oil for some non synth 15/40

Then take it for a long drive and don't pussy about too much. Getting it up to FULL operating temp and allowing it to rev freely (I don't mean thrashing it of course) and driving up to 30 or 40 miles in one go will very often re-prime the tappets. They rarely need changing, and yes it is a BIG job full of potential hassles, best avoided if at all possible !

I agree with Ghost 123. I used to get noisy tappet syndrome a lot. It rarely happens these days and I have no idea why. The tappets have not been changed. If you have a Haynes manual there is a bit in there telling you about this issue with hydraulic tappets and it explains that this is not unusual so don't panic. As Ghost says take it for a long run so that the tappets refill with oil. I found it best to drive along at a steady 50-55 mph. It may take a good 20 minutes of driving before the noise goes away. From my experience the problem seemed to occur more when doing low mileage and short journeys. Good luck.

Just change the oil and filter!
Mine normally suffers from this when its due for a oil change and has been stood for a couple of days.
It's just telling me its ready for some new oil!
