Hi everyone
I've ordered some extra strong tail gate struts to lift the tail gate and a 3 bike rack, cargasstruts have sent me this email from metrol springs. Does anyone else know if the thicker struts will still fit? Thanks
Message:
"We have received your request to to charge these T3 struts to 1250N, We can supply struts to this specification, However we would need to use thicker end fittings than normal,This may cause issues when fitting the struts, would you like us to send these struts out anyway?"

These will hold the tail gate with the bikes on the rack?

How much thicker as with rubber washer the originals are a good fit
Not sure they would lift 2 bikes because I can't even open the damn tailgate myself with two bikes on and I wouldn't like all that stress on my tailgate hinges anyway
Just take the bikes off if you need to open the tailgate

A new set of Standard struts will just about cope with a Fiamma bike rack on it's own.
As Cruz says.....I really wouldn want to be putting that much more strain on the strut anchor points.

I was just joking about the bikes still on the rack while opening

Just wanted to know what the numbers 1250N mean. I believe original ones are about 600N? Or am I wrong? So these would have double the lifting power? I have stronger struts myself. Bought them a while ago. Don't know the numbers, but my wife is struggling to close the boot with bike rack removed.

I read on here that to lift the tail gate with rack but without bikes I would need 1250 newtons struts. This is my reply from the manufacturers: I'm going to have a look in the morning. In the meantime can anyone recommend a set of strong struts? gracias
The ball joint end fitting shouldn't be an issue, however the eye type end fitting is 10mm thick and the base of the fitting is about 18mm thick, I believe with your version of the VW transporter there is only a small space for an eye end fitting to fit into,Would an end fitting of this size be acceptable?

I don't recall what the struts on ours are - I think they're 600N, but definitely date-stamped more recent than the van, so replacements. They'll hold the tailgate just fine with the rack on.
Bikes, too? Forget it. I can't even lift it an inch or three without removing those. For that you might need a pair of 1250N, but they'll wrap it round the windscreen without bikes on, probably...

I bought mine from here. Black ones, for £50. Straight fit. Using them for one year now, enough to lift a paulchen 4 bike rack (bikeless)

As I said, wife struggles to close the boot lid without the rack. So strong enough.

Just fit a set of 600N ones from Brickwerks and the tailgate tries to take my chin with it when I open it. Fiamma bike rack on the back.

Just checked, and they're definitely 600N. No problem at all with an empty rack on the tailgate.

Thanks guys, as I'd already placed the order I asked manufacturer to make them as strong as possible without changing the design-that's 650N - should do the job.
