An odd wire......earth?

I was footering about under the van - to get a few bits sorted before Volksfest and found a Brown wire hanging loose above the passenger side swing arm - toward the petrol tank
To give you a bit of back ground, my fuel gauge hasn't worked for a while - and I thought this was the earth wire for it, after a good look round and dropping the tank, the two wires to the tank sender and plug seem to be fine.
I've traced the rogue wire back along the loom and it comes out underneath passenger side between the spare wheel holder and the frame/rail that it attaches to, there seems to be a junction
The wiring runs along the back of the rail to the drivers side (small covered wire) and forward passenger side to the main loom (fat covered wires) if that makes any sense...
So the brown wire exits the loom sleeving in between these two loom joins.
I've tried earthing it to see if it helps the gauge - but with no success
Doesn't seem to affect anything
Does anyone know what it's for, as I can't find the point where it was originally attached to the body work
