Not sure where to go with this one due to the hapahazard nature of the fan kicking in.

Firtstly, the temp gauge rests between the white section and the diode, very rarely does it move from this position. If left to idle, it may, may, creep up a little but never as far as the diode, thus, the diode has yet to illuminate.

Secondly, the fan kicks in intermittently, sometimes for only a second, sometimes for 30 seconds perhaps when the fan has only been running for 5 minutes. Sometimes, it doesn't kick in at all. On a few longer journeys, the relay in the glovebox was going ten to the dozen and sounded similar to a very high speed signal.

Coolant tank is full, expansion tank may need an egg cup full once a fortnight/month.

With any luck, this symptoms will be easily recognisable to those with vastly more experience than me. Thanks in advance.

I think your thermo fan switch on the radiator might be at fault... or it is in dire need of a clean up

It probably is in need of a clean up as it's not been touched by me yet, was hoping to do it before christmas then the big freeze occurred. Could well be a job for next week as I'll have a farm workshop to use with a MASSIVE diesel heater should I need it. What thoughts lead you to believe a dirty system would show these symptoms as opposed to just a faulty switch? I'm keen to learn and will order(from BY) a swith regardless. Cheers.

That's where you - 'voice of experience' save others time/money/frustration/bruised knuckles/incorrect purchases etc. While you're dispensing advice, the missus and I........................forget it, that can wait for another day!

Mine went a bit 'Crazy' summer 2011, first speed followed by second and back to first, swapping between the two randomly every couple of seconds.
Cured with a new thermo switch from Brickwerks.
5 minute job removing the bottom grille (I think it was) on the lower right side, one out one in...loosing about an egg cup full of coolant.
Bleed screw top left as you look at it.

Is it two pin or three pin switch?
Best to check first - It might even be that fan switch wires chafing through the insulation!

Will be checking it first thing the 'moro. Although I'm hoping to put together an order for BY tonight so I'll buy one regardless.

To order the new switch all you need to know is single or two speed fan....nearly all were two speed (accept early 1.6D CS)

Changed the switch last week, no more 'haphazard' fan whirring away or relay going crrrrazy. Thanks for the input everyone, Mitch.
