Has anyone mounted the hookup plug on the side of the cab 'roofrack' on a westy type pop up? Thought I could lead it in through the rear of the 'roofrack'. I'd buy a surface mounted one rather than a flush one to keep the hole making to a minimum (repairable ) size and could mount an in line RCD directly where it came through the back of the 'roofrack'. 'Course I would have to nick the canvas or come under the seal but the bodywork wouldn't need cutting and the fan belt area wouldn't have 240v running near it.

You will find the best position to avoid damaging body work is to mount a hookup surface mounted plug behind the rear number plate...
The mounting screws can then be hidden behind the number plate...obviously the flap will be open when hooked up but that doesn't matter.

Thanks CD but I'm bothered about all the stuff that whizzes round just behind the plate. Of course I know that i won't put my hands in there to plug it in without first switching off the engine. And of course I will check the cable integrity before I set off on a camping trip. But will my wife my son ( if I was daft enough to lend the bus to him), or the person I sell it onto?

Also I'm quite keen to have the RCD as near the in plug as possible for obvious reasons and having it under the bed is potentially a pain if it trips.

So you just cable tie it well out the way and as for 'Putting your hands in there' YOU DON'T because the socket swings outwards as it's mounted on the reverse of the number plate flap.

As for your second concern about it being under the bed...then route the wire to somewhere with better access and mount the consumer unit there.

I wouldn't have any qualms about the hookup, but I'm not sure I'd put the RCD there - too great a risk of it getting damp either through road water thrown up or whilst topping up the coolant or oil.

Flush-mount the RCD on furniture, so that it's easy to test and reset?

I've bought an inline water resistant one so should be OK. Just means that I can be sure that as much of the internal wiring is protected as possible.

Any hook up points will be RCD protected too (well, they bluddy well should be) so I wouldn't overly worry about getting the RCD right next to the actual hook up point of the van although close is good (wardrobe?)

OK Paranoia has now set in . assuming , as you should, that not all hook ups will be protected, I'm putting an inline RCD in the hookup cable at the plug end. Then mount the vehicle plug behind the number plate and wire in two double sockets both of which are RCD protected. This way if I use my own hookup cable I will be protected from the hookup to the van and in the van. If I use someone elses I will protect the appliance wiring at least. Overkill? Won't work? Still need a consumer unit?
