yesterday i pushed, shoved, eased, banged, nursed until she said NO MORE!!!! I tried to refit the silencer (1.9 DG) after i'd welded up a break in it. But, no luck what so ever in trying to fit it back past the 2 support brackets, the supports kept fouling on the tin work that surrounds the silencer (what is this tin actually for?). Most frustrating as i am indeed patient and tolerant, what makes it worse is that it is the same box that came off before christmas.

Cut the 3 thin tin sections off and it slipped straight in - what on earth is the trick to fitting these things? It looked as though the supports needed the top most nut/bolt removing so they could rotate downwards, but the they look as it would be impossible to reinsert the bolts and tighten them up!!!!!!!! Obviously, i'm non too fussed now but i am curious to know the solution to this minor difficulty. Thanks in advance.

It's definitely possible to get the saddles bolted up with the silencer fitted to them. Not easy, but easier than vice-versa...

Sounds tricky, especially as they would have to be exactly the right position on the can otherwise the brackets would be aligned with the body that they fasten to. Please enlighten me some more!!!!!

You have to rotate it and push at the same time. Had to remove mine to get to the oil press switch, after a good while beating it getting nowhere it just fell off!... But getting it back OMG!! Hence realising you need to twist it into position

Fit the can and straps to the saddles, but leave it all as loose as possible. You can then wrestle it all into place, before getting the J-pipe and tailpipe on, and finally tightening it all up.

KP - just remove the water pump pulley to get to the OP switch - no need to touch the exhaust.

@ Aiden, from one forum poster to another, I will trust what you are saying is true but that sounds as though you'd need 3 pairs of hands. One to support the can, one to align bolts for the left hand side and another for the right hand side!!! There aren't many jobs that test my patience but this one certainly did, hence I resigned myself to cutting the tin away (again, what is the tin actually for????)

Three limbs, yes... I was lying on the ground, with the van on it's wheels, and the weight of the silencer along my right leg. Once you've got it into place and the first bolt in, it's a lot easier.

I take my hat off to you but when i buy a replacement, it'll be without the additional tin sections that are crimped onto the can.
