Driving to work this morning my van was clubking as i was pulling away (had done it last night to) I pulled over thingin a wheel may be loose but nothing. Stopped at lights and then it wouldnt move. Almost felt like pulling away in 4th, moved about 6inches then nothing plus had to pull really hard to get it out of gear. Got a mate to toe me in and as we pulled away there was herendous banging then went. Now no drive at all. Its a 1989 four speed with subaru bolted to it. New subaru clutch from rjes last year. Any ideas New box needed? Thanks in advance.

You've checked the CV joints haven't you ? If the bolts break you have a similar thing. The main man is on the case though so rest assured.

No havent checked them yet. The noise was so harsh and i could let the clutch out fully in gear with no noises so i automactly assumed it was the box. Have had clunking when taking up drive ever sinse ive had the van thort it could of been the diff befor???

I echo above too. The banging noise could well have been the remaining bolts in CV joint clattering away until the last couple snap and then - no drive. Often goes with a bang. Bet its an outside joint if it is - right inside the wheel housing. You'll soon find it if thats the case.

Cvs seemed intact and felt solid. They still turn when i rolled the van back and forth. Gears dont engage atall. With engine running i can shift it into every gear eith no clutch and no drive. Gear selecton underneath all intact to. Cant wate untill weekwnd to start diggin.

It might have ripped the centre out of the clutch!

I hope so as that would be a nice simple fix. Does seem more logical but was brand new last year but admitt i havent been overly sympathetic with it!

Sorry to hear of your problem, esp at this time of year and in this weather

This is the 3rd blown (suspected) gearbox on here in the last couple of days, coincidence

in gear , engine running - check the cv's are not rotating.

i had similar years ago - turned out to be the splines on the driveshaft had worn away!

never seen another , but some shafts i have removed show signs that it should not be that uncommon!

Cvs seem fine i rocked the van back and forth whil laying underneath and they both turned. Im guessing clutch gone or poss the output shaft? Cant wate to find out!

The CVs will turn if you rock the wheels as they are connected - I suspect that billy is suggesting that the internal splines may be gone possibly at the top in this case

Saying that it could be a number of things internally also!!!

Got it apart today and looks like the input shaft has sheered off and smashed the diff. Can i replace the diff or would it damaged the gears to. Do i bother with a second hand one but running a subaru it may happen again or do i bite the bullet and get a recon one?
