How do i know if my oil cooler is working properly. It is very rusty looking. Is it worth changing and how difficult/easy is it.

If it was blocked, your engine would have blown up.
If it had holes in it, oil would leak out.
That's all there is to it really, not much else to go wrong (unless the fins are totally blocked up)

Preventative maintenance is always a good thing and as they are easy to change, if in doubt = do it (assuming they are readily available ?)

p.s. I know little about Aircooled's but an oil cooler is an oil cooler (only yours is simpler because it doesn't have a water inlet / outlet )

As long as the fins / mesh is clear and clean is should be working. The matrix inside shouldn't get blocked like a water radiator can because the oil is usually cleaner & less corrosive than coolant. If after a long run you can take out the dipstick and hold it in your hand the oil cooler is working.

Unless someone's removed the cooling flaps.

I've got a good used one here for £25 inc delivery should you need it?

steve to change cooler you can do it without dropping engine out , or removing any cylinder tinwear , you just remove alloy fan shroud and main pulley takes about an hour , they dont usually go rusty but if you do decide to replace it you will need new genuine cooler seals
