Hi folks i know this is probably not the right section as it's only 2wd but I though you guys should be able to help
I have a 2wd auto tin top with a 2.2 subaru in unfortunately I am restricted to automatic s as I have a disability
I really fancied having a go at green laining and finding some remote places to wild camp my bus is stock hight for
a devon transporter and I know I will probably have to chop and raise the sump for ground clearance and ive been
looking in to which wheels and tyres you guys go for but do you think I would stand a chance only being a 2wd auto
and not a syncro? I dont want to climb rock faces I just want to get out in the wilderness and enjoy the countryside
any advice would be most welcome

Without a diff lock I think you may get stuck quite soon.....

there was a turkish guy @ syncro 25 and he had a dissiblitly,dont know what yours is mr auto but perhaps you might wanna look in to adapting a syncro to your requiremnts,you will just get stuck going of road in an auto 2wd...try going for the real deal

fitting an lsd would improve it's ability toget off the beaten track
I have seen some pics of a audi tiptronic autoboxed syncro ,very trick; i have the guy's info somewhere on my computer

Hi thanks for the replys guys I think im right in thinking vw never made an auto syncro
and my driving instructor would only allow me to take the automatic test as I only have one hand and one foot so I wouldnt be allowed to take my good hand off the steering wheel to change gear never mind operate a clutch
so I would need to retake my test again which isnt going to happen
So im thinking other car manfacturers do automatic 4wd autos I already have a subaru engine in so could l fit
there 4wd box as well and mate it to some syncro parts to make my own syncro auto ? or is there a better
way of doing it with another manufacturers 4wd auto box ? or could I fit a syncro diff lock to my auto box
I know I seem to ask all the difficult questions

Very light lanes may be possible but anything more and you need 4wd really. I've used a Syncro in 2wd and even with the diff lock working its nowhere near as capable as a 4wd Syncro.

Hi thanks guys I have had to live my life solving problems so im sure there will be a solution
its just a matter of finding the right one jed ive been on campervan culture and seen the bash plates
ect you guys fit on syncros and im sure raising the ride hight will be some thing I may have to do
but I think I may have more than that to overcome to get out there
half the fun is solving the problem but if i can do it I bet I will apreciate it a hell of a lot more
keep the ideas coming I like a good challenge

Any info on he audi box would be great it's looking like 4wd is the way to go
Triptonic does sound pretty technical I bet theres a ton of wireing

decide which way to go

I admire you taking on the challenge.

My thoughts are either keep the van and do what you can with it,
you obviously like it and I like autos myself,
wish the syncros came in automatic too.
There must be plenty of things to make it capable off road.
But campers do get heavy and the easiest way to take it off road would be to keep it very light,
especially at the front, and limited slip at the back.
Or what does PetenAli's trials beetle do at the back end?
Could it be independent brakes?

At the end of the day you may have spent a lot of money,
and created something that doesnt drive all that well on the road..

Compared to another idea which is look at a Mercedes G Wagon Auto.
There was a great link recently to a story of an old couple going round the world in one.
What strikes me is that even though you are not climbing cliff faces as you say,
you really do not want to get stuck if you are disabled..
So better to over specify for what you need.
I have owned one of these and they are fairly hard to get stuck even if you try to,
and they are a delight to drive on the road long distance.

The camperization of it would be a challenge,
but it is something you might appreciate doing to suit your own needs.

If you do stick with the VW I have a mate here in PZ who is very capable,
he drives the same as you a T25 Tintop Auto,
and he is paralysed waist down,
last I heard he was going to look for a subaru motor for his.
He uses total hand control setup, which might interest you anyway,
worth a chat.
Hes also a great mechanic specialising in T25s!

Don't VW do a t4/t5 auto allrad ??

Could be cheaper than converting your t25 ??

A lot of modern cars run manual gear boxes with an automatic clutch and gear selection run by an ecu. Adapting a system like this may be an option if you are totally commited to this

You need a Mitsubishi Delica - cheap, plenty of room to put camper stuff in, rugged, reliable and automatic!

I hate to say this but totally agree with Syncropaddy as the least hassle/ cost option and I think its a great vehicle, dont think too many of us would have any objections to you bringing it along either, it would be good to compare a Delica to a Syncro in the lanes as well.
