Hi all, new to the forum, I have aquired a 1988 1.6d DoKa and need to know the design gross weight of the vehicle, my local test centre reckon it needs to have commercial rated tyres but checking the MOT manuals on the VOSA site if it is 3000kg or below then it is a class 4 vehicle and doesn't need them. Could anyone help?

Mine runs on commercial tyres.
Handbook says 185 R 14 C 6 PR - the C denotes commercial as far as I know.

What sizes are stated on the sticker on the door frame?

For a class 4 it should be irelavant like you say...

Just checked the exact definition - the C denotes 6 ply on a light truck tyre. That is what VW specified in the handbook.

You're right Max but I may need to prove that the design gross weight is 3000kg or below for it to fall into class 4

Yep...but other tyres can be used..and we're on carravelles etc..it's not up to you to prove it...it's up to them to test it correctly! Ask for an appeal form...that should help them sort themselfs out..

Not purchased wheels and tyres yet so ideally would like to know the gross weight in advance as this could affect the choice of size

92 rating is to low @ 1260kg axle load, the rear axle has a load rating of 1300kg you need tyres to match the highest axle load.
