alternator charging light strangeness

When I stopped to day and turned off the headlights I noticed (with the engine running of course!) that the alt light was dimmly flickering. I've not noticed it before so I turned the lights back on and the alternator light stopped flickering! A bit less on side lights but still there. diesel AAZ in case that matters the multipin plug portion of the dash circuit board isn't too clever, a couple of broken tracks in there but I cant see why the light would go out when the headlights come on. Any ideas?

bad earth at the engine end perhaps, you can get same manifestation on a wbx with a broken alt mount

T hanks Aidan, i'll take a look, i have done them all before but might be Forth rd bridge maintenance.

my dim flicker turned into a glow then the alternator diode plate went pop after a few weeks
