Hi Guys and Gals

I have had the unfortunate luck to have been involved in an Accident over the weekend, not my fault hasten to add. My insurers are being very good at their job as its a specialist camper policy... However they have warned me that the other parties insurers may write the van off and assess it as a regular 26 year old vehicle.

So can anyone advise me of respectable, insurance approved, T25 friendly body repair shops in the Newport/Cardiff/Bristol/Gloucester/Hereford area?

I know NOTHING about insurance but you read bits and remember them etc. I thought if you have an accident and its not your fault you can insist the other party repairs it and they cant argue? Might be wrong as so much dross is repeated on the interent its hard to seperate fact from fiction

IF that isnt the case can you not collect the cheque and buy the salavge back anyway?

If they pay you out ie they have bought it off you , you might be able to buy it back, always the risk they say no for whatever reason. If they haven't then one potentially has the option to negotiate keeping what is already yours and accepting a lower pay out.

That is if its not a Cat A or B (unless ones holds the correct licence to handle it i guess)

In the last year or so he is now vw/skoda/audi approved but does a lot of top end stuff - last time i spoke to him he was just ordering a wing mirror (just the casing) for a bentley and i nearly hurled when i heard the price.

Probably be able to give you very good insurance type advice aswell as he deals with them daily.

forget all the cat this that or the other, op has a bump ,he gets an estimate for repairs ,say the cost of repairs come to 4k and van is worth 3k , well obviously the insurers wont give the op more than its worth, and generally they would offer 3 to 3250( roughly 20-25% less than body shop insurance rated repair cost) to enable you to carry out repairs yourself,this would be a full and final settlement and you retain your property,ie the van, you dont tx ownership to the insurer and then attempt to buy back , you retain it at all times and any settlement would include an allowance for what is termed 'salvage' , the isnsurance also save money which is the name of the game to them,easier to talk you through it if you wanted rather than try to explain in type.
oh and i would advise against the van leaving your custody and control , take it to a repair shop for an estimate if drivable, or they will come and do one (we do)at your place if its not drivable ,
like wise insurance loss adjuster will come to you as well.and it helps if you have a meticulouse sheet itemising everything thats needed and costings of same , where new is not available then replacement at sourced prices inc s/hand, this helps as they dont deal with these vans every week.so your doing there job for them, been doing this since the 70's in my own right

Roger that Micky. You say forget the cat thing, what happens if its a cat B ? Can the insurance company refuse to let him keep it/buy it etc as , as joe public he wouldnt have a licence? Im still learnding

iirc it remains your property regardless, until you sign summat to say otherwise.

If it remains your property, presumeably you are allowed to break it yourself then. Is there any VOSA/DVLA paperwork you have to use to prove you have disposed of it/not put it back on road? Do the DVLA insist on a VIN check on the salvage remains?

I am guessing this must be regulated some way?

It's on a slip on your log book iirc, (I could go and dig mine out but I will leave it for you to look )
I think there is a bit you fill in and send off to tell them the vehicle has been scrapped.

i know how a V5 works, sausage! (funnily enough looked at disposal section a few months back for first time in donkeys and it was aksing for name/address of registered dismantler or words to that effect)

Just trying to get my head round this insurance malarky. IF a vehicle is not allowed to be put back on the road, is joe public allowed to dispose of the remains or does it have to go thr a licenced dismantler to satisfy any legal requirements ie prove it hasnt been put on the road?

Diiference between one that has been scrapped as its dead and one thats been scrapped and been deemed not allowed to go back on road.

Still terribly confuse, wheres Tradesize when you need him?
