not really strong enough and way too expensive,great if you would like to appear on Tool Time if thats what your looking for then your better of with a winch in a bag

I like the look of that a lot.
Would have been useful catching van from sliding off an adverse cambered muddy track.
Like that its easy to use on other vehicles or things

Well I like the idea of a winch that would do the job and to be honest I am not sure of either.

The other day I was out in the woods and had loaded up logs,
the track was cambered and van slipped half off the edge and was going to ditch itself.
The ideal would be to have something that could be controlled remotely while driving out.
Pulling sideways from a tree or stump.
It was like when Craig slipped off in Devon Lanes last time but without a team.
Had to basically do a lot of digging to level the track.
Would one of these help in that situation?

Yes it would, so would a hand winch too; that rathcet strap was marginal and annoying, but Samuel (Mr Mule) took care of that side of things in Devon (I've since practised a lot more with the bloody things)

The best help is both a decent tree-strop, a decent length rope that's nice and handleable and yet strong enough, some connectors and a suitable tree or land anchor of some sort... AND a few peeps ready and willing to help of course.

BUt its not the same as 12,000 lb electric winch on front or back.

The removable winches that fit to tow ball hitch are pretty handy, stored away until you need them... think PKid might have bought one at the Overland Show.

IMO, the light weight and handleability of so-called plasma rope has transformed the usability of winches? Not sure whether plasma rope would work on that capstan winch, but for sure it would be too expensive to use at those long lengths they suggest.

isn`t it one of the golden rules that you dont use the tow ball for recovery?? fine with a 12000lb winch on a heavy camper but an 8000lb is more than enough on a doka or sika

Do we know anyone with a rear mounted winch?
I've been trying to find an easy way to fit a front one but it appears it's only syncro services who make a mounting plate and so far I'm not getting any reply to the emails, although I know he's probably busy with personal stuff.

I was wondering if we could mount a winch ontop of the towbar cross beam. There are issues with this location that on the single cab the winch woud stop the engine hatch from opening. Which brings in iteration two where we remove the circular cross bar (westy type) and fabricate a beam which allows the winch to sit down. I don't have any concerns that the beam could be fabricated strong enough to do the job, it's more a question of the tow bar mounts to the vehicle being strong enough.

Although ironically this solution is taking me away from the ideal of a simple and easy to install winch solution.

im looking at fitting a small 1.5-2ton winch with plasma rope on the shelf above and in front of my engine on my doka, just something to use when pulling a van up onto my car trailer, im planning to try and fit a hawse fairlead as in the pic


then i can double up on the strength with a pulley block if i need to drag myself out of trouble backwards, this combined with a full size 5-6 ton winch mounted up front should hopefully be able to get me out of almost any mess ( i think those words will come back to haunt me )

it's more a question of the tow bar mounts to the vehicle being strong enough.

I have seen that crop up quite a few times too while reading up on recovery snatching by experts.
