Another door question. I promise i have searched other posts before posting my own problem. The passenger door will not unlock with the key. When turned with the key, the 'knob' on the inside doesn't rise sufficiently and it's the same problem if i try to lift it from the inside. The small lever that sits within the exterior door handle is flush rather than protruding, thus, it doesn't allow me to squeeze it in order to operate the opening mechanism. I can only imagine that the (absolutely perfect at present) door card needs to come off, is this so and is it possible whilst the door is locked closed? The doors are not centrally locked by the way. Thanks in advance.

We've got the same problem with the cheap eBay handle on the passenger door. The lever on the outside can stick in. On ours, it takes a firmer turn of the key but it does pop out.

Try wiggling the lever, it may come free. Alternatively, try pulling the interior knob up as you turn the key. The problem's almost certainly the handle itself, rather than inside the door.

Lubrication is the answer, the handle's easy to take off ... give everything a nice soaking in WD40 and then a fine oil (3-in-1 stylee) Things are getting stiff in their old age

can you open the door from inside?

if not get a small piece of metal plate , rod and lever the small lever so it is in the correct position ,this should allow you to open the door.


with the door open look along the line of the handle behind the door rubber , a cross head phillips bolt needs to be undone , the handle pushed away from the rubber to release it.

as said , lubrictaion will be needed and usually the return spring is broken , but once unseized this is not needed anyhow.

with the handle off you should be a ble to lock / unlock the door by pushing the lever in the door in and out ,up and down to lock it! ( door closed)

I wiggled, I waggled, I wobbled, I wibbled, etc. for a few days without any luck (after soaking the exterior catch with WD 40) and all but gave up BUT I just happened to see that the little catch had come away just enough for me to get a micro electrical screw driver in and seperate it from the main handle. Joy of joys, I'm so happy I could dance!!!!! Thanks all.

Remove the door handle (1 screw) and lube it properly

Great news. Now replace that handle, before it does it again... As I said, the one we're having similar (but less severe) problems with is a brand spanker off the bay of Fleas, so if you can get a good used handle, so much the better. You'll be able to swap your existing lock barrel into that, too - the standard locks don't even fit into the new cheap handles!

Ignore that ^ When lubed the old one will be just fine.

@Ian, HOW DARE THEE. I'm quite accomplished when it comes to the 'Dad Dance', all I need is more weddings, anniversaries and Bar Mitzvahs to hone my moves on the dance floor!!!


When you say that only 1 screw needs to be undone to remove the handle, is this after the door card has been removed or is it located/accessible with the card in tact? Cheers.

As Billy said somewhere up there ^ just open the door, and look at the rear edge. See the little half-moon nick in the edge? Peel the rubber back there. THAT screw. Then just pivot the handle away from the door. No need to touch the door card.

Only problem with 2nd hand handles is they usually have massive gouges worn into the lock barrel hole which can mean your door can be opened using anything from another key to a sausage
