fuel pressure

Hi folks,
I recently run out of petrol( luckily outside my house), well I left it a few days before I stuck in 5 litres just to get me upto the petrol station. Now it won't start.
I changed the fuel filter last summer and the same time cleaned up the filter so I know it's not them.
Fuel seems to get to the fuel pressure regulator and onto the fuel rail but not under any great pressure. It seems like the system has de-pressurized and I can't pressurise it.
I thought just cranking it over pressurised it, but I've tried that until my battery went flat. was I wrong? and can anyone help?
It was running sweet as before except for the slight oil leak, but thats another post I think. Started first time every time.
The van is a 2.1 dj auto. Some have said it could be the AFM but why when it's empty.
Thanks
