Can anybody tell me how to get into the battery housing on my Westy Joker under the drivers seat? To get into the passenger one I had to turn the seat round 180 degrees before I could open the flap, but the steering wheel is in the way on the drivers side.
And does the leisure battery charge up from the van or just the mains only? It's a black plastic unit under the back seat that is the mains charger, just above the Eberspacer heater.

Hi Dubstar,

If you push down the righthand side drivers seat armresr and turn it clockwise then it will give you access to your leisure battery. Just been out and checked it on mine!

The leisure battery is charged up from the vehicle alternator and the Zig unit

but if its a older westy (like mine) there is a relay in the battery box which switches when the engine is running, if its not charging get a new 5 pole one from a motor factors , £2.50. ....if its any consolation, my battery box is permanently open as the leisure battery is just massive and wont shut.

Thanks so far.My Westy is a 1981 Aircooled, and it doesn't have armrests. It's the back of the seat that hits the steering wheel.I've tried pushing it all the way forward and all the way back before I turn it round and I've still not figured it out. It's like a giant Rubicks cube puzzle-but with only 2 parts!

Have you tried leaning the seat forward then spinning it around?

Not yet. I might just sneak out from work when no-ones looking and give it a try.

dubstar, mine has the arm rests but theyre not the problem, i have the same problem as you. i got it round once, but it wasnt worth the strife, now it stays forward and we just turn the passenger one round.

Ok, I've just done this today, you slide the seat forward right off the rails, put it to one side.

Rotate the seat base 180 degrees as normal, fit/replace battery.

Rotate seat base back 180 degrees, refit seat on rails.

Go have a cup of tea/pint/G and T.
