doors wont open

Good evening all ,i cant open the sliding door or the back door or the passenger door.When i turn the key its like a strong spring,and the door latch goes up but doesnt click into the open position, the doors will open if i hold the key in in the open position ie turn and hold ,any ideas any little tricks 
its a 1989 caravelle with central locking that works intermitantly.
