Not that far from Brighton is a nice site in Alfriston(can't remember the name, but there's only 1) fires allowed, cheap, but showers are basic. They have a couple of Hookups too.
It's also a stones throw from Cuckmere Haven, which is nice. There's a cafe and pub etc. I'd avoid camping in Brighton itself though.

There is a nice place at Small Dole. Lots of hook ups and there are showers but they are basic. Very near a small country park .As far as i can remember its quite cheap for the south coast

I agree, they are tidy and not a spot of litter in sight. A few contractors have started using it too now but resident parking vouchers are easy enough to get so you can stay as long as you like.

Not city centre only a 5 min drive away but you can wild camp at ovingdean opposite st dunstans

Drive out of Brighton on a259 go past roe dean school and take a left at the roundabout before you get to rotting dean village (which is worth a visit)

For hook up n showers its wilsons ave camp site opposite Brighton marina.

Hope you enjoy visit to Brighton - I recommend the NORTH Laines for unique independent shopping
