Tdi Starter Motor

Hi guys - my starter motor sticks when the engine start and makes a horrible noise. So We have taken it off thinking a new bendix (whatever that is ?) Turns out its pretty shot, and is an old mid 80's 1.6 T25 Diesel model. - So should I replace like for like (I know it will fit) or fit a TDi version, which I'm unsure will fit the existing holes.
This is on a syncro, so there may be issues clearing the fuel tank if the TDi one is longer.
Thanks
Rich

you can use a starter adapter so the tdi one fits. something like this
http://www.tdi-umbau.com/spezialteile-t ... im-t3.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or brickwerks, who also give you the starter motor part numbers
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php?p ... t&Itemid=3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
i know syncro people use them, i will be soon. But you could always drop b'werks a email to check it fits ok?

I am using this adapter.

Very happy with it. TDI golf starter fits perfectly and works as it should.
I can sell you my old working starter motor from a TD.
