I am interested in this as I will be going etdi at some point. How does it work ( mac / pc) are there different versions , do you need a stand alone 'reader' or does it hook up to your laptop ? Are people running cracked copies or can you buy the real deal ? Any experiences / info really. Cheers

Depends what you want it to do.
Cheapest way is to buy a £6 VCDS lead off ebay and install the disc it comes with. Will give you enough to read fault codes and first 20 or so measuring blocks. Dont think you can do adaptations with shareware version.
If you are a computer geek you can download the full version off the net and use a £6 ebay lead . It does work as a mates got it BUT when he tried putting it on my laptop it wouldnt play as its a 32 bit programme and my laptop is 64 bit. No amount of computer kung fu would make it work.
Have a look on ross-tech to see if they do 64 bit version and/or patch if you go for a torrent version maybe.

I have the £6 lead and disc, I've looked at getting vagcom. With the £6 lead rosstech will sell you a download of vagcom for from memory about a 3rd of the price of the proper vagcom with the rosstech lead, you do not get full functions and if your laptop fails you have to buy it again. The full version gives you the ability to change computers a couple of times. I'll get it one day, but it's stupid money. I would not bother with the cheaper rosstech version.
The £6 lead is ok, but it does not allow you to see much and you can't change or log anything.
Lots of info on rosstech site as Elvis says
I'm going to get a mityvac first as its £50 and most of my faults have been vacuum related

Hello,
if you've got a mac with an intel chip you can partition and install xp alongside mac OS - I've got vag-com working on a macbook pro for example. If you're using linux you can do it under Wine - bit tricker but it can be done too.

Elvis, it's at
https://rapidshare.com/files/3752871011/Virtual.PC.exe.
It is a self-extracting rar archive - 515Mb.

Good one Ewen. That would also mean I could run memory maps as well.

Jes you can try my genuine version if you like. I have it on a windows netbook. After you have had a play you can either take the plunge on one or not. Off to the US soon so can bring the cable back to save on the tax if you like.

The full version is available for free on the Internet. It's a bit of a pain to run the crack if you don't know what you are doing. I would have to get help!
Obviously, it's illegal and I haven't done it and club 8090 is completely against pirate software blah blah.....

Ive just bought the lite version for $99 (£64) does almost everything the full version does apart from
Limitations of VCDS-Lite compared to VCDS even if Fully Registered:
No Generic OBD-II
Won't work with CAN-Bus vehicles
Fewer fault code definitions and label files
No built-in Activation (you'll be limited to a single PC)
No Advanced Measuring Blocks
No Acceleration Measurement
there is a fuller comparision here
http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/vag-functions.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I should be able to do most things i want with this, but if i find i want the full version, ross tech take off the cost of the lite version when you upgrade
