Business is picking up again after the summer, cash flow has changed direction, time to get the wheel arch done...

I'm getting a new panel put in, the welder doesn't do painting, what's the best procedure?

I've had a look at the wiki, there's good info about complete resprays, how about smaller jobs? There's lots of info around about prepping; I'm wondering more about actual paint types. For instance, I've heard some kinds are impossible to paint over later.

Or is there somone in Bristol/S. Wales/Midlands who can do it nicely for me?

Is there just a tin of something I can buy over the counter that I can bung on the new panel (comes primed by the welder) that: a) will keep the elements out until the respray; and b) won't be a problem to paint over.

Its an acrylic coating that also puts paid to any likelihood of rust development and can be painted over as and when. A £6 bottle is enough to do a whole panel by the way as it only needs to go on thin and can be applied with a brush. Doesn't stink either

ChickenKoop just replaced one wheelarch for me two days ago (we're both Coventry based) and this is what we used to paint into the seams and protect bare metal until I have time to use primer etc. When you do the wheel arch and if its a rear one, paint a coat of vactan inside where the seam is, refit the inner panel and forget it - its that good.

As for actually painting your vehicle, Kevtherev gave a good recommendation or if you want to do it yourself, find the thread on 'rustolem' and consider rollering the paint on (yes you CAN get a nice finish). Otherwise its two-pack or whatever your sprayer recommends.

I've been in touch with the welder, Jim Cotsweld in Cheltenham.

A wee while ago he said he could fit me in more or less any time, as it was a small job. Yesterday he said he couldn't do me until December! Until he realised he was confusing me with a big job.

Other than that, he's told me that any job they do always goes out with a waterproof base coat. I'm told he used to do paint work before he moved to welding, so that's probably why. So that's me pretty much covered.

ps that dam picture is amazing (I used to do that stuff for a living) (photography, not damming)

try cropping it 25% off the right and 35% or so off the left. Or similar. It will look most surreal...

It's one of 5 dams in the Elan vally near Rhyader mid-Wales...that one isn't the biggest.
The complex of lakes supply Birmingham and the West midlands and parts of Wales with water.
best time to visit is in the spring when the snow melts on the mountains behind.
They are all "spill dams" so are quite spectacular when over flowing

That sounds very cheap! Do you know if it was baked in an oven? I'd be interested in some more details definately.
