Push rod tube Seals Gone Again?!!!

Can anyone explain why this happens?

I had an oil leak which was the puchrod tube seals. Replaced the seals and everthing ok, no leaks no smoke, sorted. Just done a day out in the van and the leak is back. The van is an Aircooled 2.0 ltr. The leak only appears to be on cylinder 1 if that makes a difference. Wondered if it could be a something that might require lots of kerching.

A lot depends on the quality of the seals. On mine one side leaks as they didn't have enough seals in the same order, had to do it with slightly cheaper ones and you can see that they are considerably thinner.

If poss, try to get the green ones. If they were green then I have no idea!

the ones i bought were the cheap ones 0.65 form jk. I think the tubes my be slightly nackered, but i'm new to this so don't the difference between one which is ok and one destined for campervan heaven.

The one GOOD thing about doing seals on yours is that you don'r have to remove heads to do it as you can pull tubes out through the head. Sometimes its just a badly seated seal.

One way ChickenKoop and I devised to move stubborn tubes was after removing rocker assembly and pushrods, we placed a socket on a bar inside the tube or ideally a bit of solid tubing ( nice sliding fit is best) and used this support to prevent crushing the tube when using molegrips to move them - worked rather well that. I think its more likely a trapped or badly seated seal than just down to an inferior type.

Its the cheap ones from JK that leak on mine, the expensive ones are on one side and the cheap on another. The price is worth the piece of mind, if you order the more expensive ones you'll see the difference in thickness.

They're high temp ones so they should cope even if it gets a bit hot down there (like when my heat exchangers melted) :oops: .

Genuine VW seals are the only way to go....and of course fitting them correctly.

When fitting the new seals, ensure all is spotlessly clean, take your time and make absolutely sure you have everything lined up before you start to push, I find a slight twisting action helps things along.

I always use a smear of Hylomar to help lubricate the new seals and their housings, I use a tight fitting piece of dowel/broom shank to get a better purchase.
