Good day fellow vw owners! Please bear with me as I am new to this camper owning malarky and mechanics. I've been trying to read as much as I can (with out getting told off at work) about Diesel engines and conversions.

I was told my camper has a 1.9 td conversion but I do not know any more than that.

I think it's an afn engine from an Audi bit the diesel pump I think is from the original jx. Please can you view my pictures and advise

Many thanks

James

Hello,

it certainly looks like a tdi engine (such as an AFN/AHU) with a mechanical pump - see if you can find a flat spot on the engine block just between number 3 and 4 injectors and below - it should have the engine code etched into it. If you show us the turbine side of the turbo - i.e. the flange where the exhaust meets the turbo, then we can tell if it's wastegate or not and hence whether it's likely to be a an AFN or AHU.

Are you running this at the moment? You have no glow-plugs by the look of it - you might want them soonish although the direct injection engines don't need a lot of glow. I'd be surprised if you were getting anything like the pressure you'd want for this engine from that pump unless it's highly modified. How's it running?

Ewen

Hi ewen,

Thank you so much for the reply,

Yes i am running it at the moment, although its a second vehicle so not used very often.

with regards to the glow plugs, i think they're in there but just are not connected at all so won't get any glow. I don't suppose you know how they should be connected and what relay it would require. I've searched the internet but am seemingly easily confused with all the numbers and abbreviations. haha!

it runs really well, when its warm. when it first starts its very lumpy, i'm guessing because the engine is cold from the non working glow plugs. its also very smokey and burning oil :( which is annoying. But we are currently looking for a doner engine. Probably an AAZ.

Thanks again

James

Don't right off the engine due to excessive smoke as this could be down to the pump not being right-contact regcheeseman on here-he's a mine of info on hybrid pumps-and a top man(he hasn't paid me to say that!!)he may be able to build you a cable operated pump-mtdi-and save you a lot of time and money.
Glow plug relay and wiring should be in the black box in front of the air filter-look for a thick red wire-you will need to visit breakers for the leads which attach to the glow plugs-look like mini ht leads-push fit i think on tdi engine.
Hope this is of some help.

Pete

Hi Pete,

Thank you for the info.

I will contact him, soon.

It would be a shame as the engine seems to drive really well. My girl friend and i just took a trip around from swindon to nottingham, down to warwick and stratford, then over to northampton, then down to welwyn garden city and back to swindon. about 750 km in total from thursday to sunday and the van drove beautifully.

a question about the turbo though, when should this kick in? the van still have the old (i'm guessing original) 4 speed box in and is revving about 4k at 60mph will this be using the turbo the whole time. There is a pressure gauge fitted i'm guessing to the turbo and it only ever read a max of 0.2 bar. just curious if while i'm cruising down the motorways its pushing fuel through using the turbo and perhaps more than is needed. Not as economical as one hopes.

Thanks

James
