Radiator fan not working - update - FIXED!!

Hi folks, can anyone point me in the right direction of the radiator fan fuse and / or relay on my 1983 diesel van? I have checked the fan whilst it was off the van, connected direct to a battery and it works fine but it is not cutting in whilst fitted on the van.
I bled the cooling system today and the rad was hot but the fan did not cut in, is there any other way of testing things out ?
Thanks,Will.

all that is in the haynes.
It matters not what watercooled engine it is
and there's a switch on the radiator that can break
the test for that is in the haynes too

it dont come on when its just hot , it needs to be **********ing hot... pull the plug of the sensor on the rad and use a bit of wire to bridge the 2 terminal s in the plug , if 3 wire then find live and pair it wirth each of the other 2 and if the fan then works on one speed or 2 if so configured then we advise on next step , which would probably meen the van is beyond help and repair so i will lumber myself with it and give you say £500 for it if you deliver

did you check the electric "switch" on the radiator?

Be careful what you wish for mm, that sounds like quite a tempting offer right now

I think for the sake of £12.00 I will just order one. I would be interested to know which fuse/relay controls the fan /switch if anyone knows?

eh?
Of course it isn't... I assumed you would have a watercooled manual for your watercooled van
your
radiator cooling and
fan systems relays and fuses is common to diesel or petrol

Kev, I asked the question because I don't have a water cooled manual

There's a lot more information about your question in there with pictures and everything even a test for the circuit, I haven't the time to type it all out.
Anyway there is no fuse for the fan.

Search for the current source of the PDF version of the Bentley manual...
You don't mention having tried jumpering the switch in the rad, and checking with a multimeter to see if you've got 12v or not.

hah, that bad today eh...
have you tried as i suggested with the wires, no point wasting money and work. 5 minutes to check , if you fit a new switch you still wont know if the circuit is functioning so get out there and do it....

No, not too hot on electrics

No, not too hot on electrics

You want me to be brutally honest here?
If the thought of such basic trouble-shooting causes you problems, then it's point-and-pay time.
Get a multimeter. Less than £20.
Set it to a mode that covers +12v, probably going to be marked as 20vDC. DIsconnect the plug from the rad switch. Put one meter probe to the middle (IIRC) terminal on the plug, the other to earth. Have you got 12v?
Yes? Get a bent bit of wire. Put it between the middle terminal and one side. Doesn't matter which. Does the fan fire up? To the other side. Does the fan fire up? Yes to both? It's the switch. Or the water isn't hot enough.

All right you're on, I will stick a wire into the switch and see what happens

It' ll be tomorrow night though, it is my Son's birthday party tonight. If I am not around to celebrate any more after tomorrow we will all know why
Just kidding, I will report back once I have checked things out tomorrow.
Will
