How do I know what type of wheel nut / bolt to use on an alloy?

Firstly you need to know what make alloy wheel you have

VW alloys use a different arrangement to most others (Merc, Ford etc)

If you go to Brickerks pages HERE and click on some of the wheel bolts or nuts (not the studs) there is more info on which is which.

Thanks, I'll check the wheels to see if they have a make or I'd marks on.
if I can't. Tell the make is there a way of telling by looking at the wheels bolt hole?

You really could do with knowing what they actually are as if you don't, you don't know if they are safe to use on a 2 ton camper van ! If you are ever unfortunate to be involved in an accident, this is just the sort of thing insurance companies will pick up on !
