Hi folks, I have had a look and I can't really find much in the way of diesel pump timing. I understand some special tools and dial test indicators are required - none of which I have but I just wondered if there is a laymans guide to checking and adjusting pump timing without the special gear.

My van starts up ok but has no power, misfires at low revs and chucks out plumes of white smoke; I would just like to rule the pump and injectors out of the equation if at all possible before doing a compression test and / or taking the head off.

If anyone near Leeds has the tools / knowledge to do the testing i would be happy to pay, failing that any advice would be gratefully accepted.

OK best I can suggest is what was told to me, turn the pump toward the head that will advance it there is not a lot of movement on the pump so only a little is required, worth a go.

without the proper kit dont mess around with it, the slightest bit wrong and it could cost you a hell of a lot more than the price of the correct tools!

That's what I was worried about, not sure where to go with this now Something is definitely not right, is there any way to test the injectors or is it just substitution with known good ones?

James, I can't see what harm it would do, just put it back to where it was if it runs worse*?

Will have you changed the fuel filter and or drained any water from the filter?

The van was empty when it turned up so it has all fresh fuel in it now and I pulled it through to the pump with a hand held vacuum - but no... I haven't changed the filter yet or drained any water off. Are you thinking that it might be contaminated fuel? I have just ordered new oil and filters I will get them changed and report back.

Would it start properly if there was air in the system, It seems to start ok? Would drawing air in make it smoke and misfire?

I have spent hours setting up derv pumps after some one has tweeked um, even just a little bit! Worse case they can run away and blow up if the wrong bit is adjusted!!

That is probably why my pump has come back from specialist with yellow paint on all the nuts and screws.

very much so!!!! hence why I have a variety of paint pens for marking stuff up!

My pump is covered in yellow paint - can I assume from that, that it has been set up properly?
