Hi folks, now the cold weather is fast approaching I have decided Gill needs the Porta Potty inside the van for disposing of all the beer / wine she has consumed in the evening !

I know you can get a "box" to put it in, we would have ours behind the passenger seat, but where can you get such a box ? (I saw one on ebay @ £250 )

p.s. = I would have a go at making one, but woodwork is not my special subject and I do not have the right tools either.

DaveyP2004 on the brickyard did sell repro westfalia boxes for about £120. He is in Liverpool which isn't far from you

I have a 365 in mine. I bought the taller version with the cushion and it is excellent quality I'm also sure I bought some brackets from him for attatching to the van then I got some 30cm leather saddle straps for securing it as wesfalia did (http://www.carradice.co.uk/index.php?pa ... ccessories_" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). I also fitted a screwfix adjustable gas strut hinge to the lid so it stays up when in use

Thanks for the reply Cruz, decided that £120 is a bit much for what I need (ie not Westy spec ) so have put a "wanted" up on here for summat more "economical"

what about adapting one of the wooden tea chests, made in ceylon. a few on ebay. ie 271089029070

I know toilet etiquette varies across the country but I've never seen one with 'saddle straps' and i've never met anyone who admitted to needing them.

I'm still wondering if I could get over my poor woodworking skills and make one.

I suppose the box sides and base "should" be easy enough, joined with those plastic cabinet fasteners, but the front side would have to be lower than the seat of the potty and that then means the lid would have to have a vertical bit at the front, then you would have to put "edge trim" on the exposed edges and sort the correct type of hinges, then cover (it in a manner that looked good) with carpet...

Nah, as I typed that I said to myself, Nah you will only f it up, waste money and annoy yourself

Have a word with Kathyshack. She made her own basic box for the porta potti and it's very nifty and covered in cool stickers

Re; poor woodworking skills.
In a previous van, when making a loo box, I worked out the dimensions of the sides base and lid, then got B&Q to cut it from a single sheet of mdf on their big industrial jig. Took them a couple of minutes and saved me a lot of effort and dodgey edges. I then fastened it together with those plastic blocks and hinges for the lid. Didn't cost much either. I then primed and painted to match interior and velcro'd large cushion from Dunelm onto lid. Super functional and a fraction of the price of secondhand Westie box .

It has to be dead easy to make one surely. Mine looks like a very simple design and doesn't have a base (why would it need one)? Simply four same sized pieces joined with those corner type brackets (don't know what they're called) with a lid and a cushion on top ...!

It's the lid and the finish that stops me making one.

The front side panel would have to be lower than the front of the potty seat (think about it) and that means the lid would not be a simple square but would need a lip hanging down the front. Extra complications over a "simple box".

Then it would have to be covered in some sort of padded material to make it look ok, glued on, where to get it, how to neatly "dress" or "trim" the edges.

Might have a go, but I bet I waste the cost of the wood !
Someone on here has offered me a used one, I must get round to checking the dimensions ! Of course it's not urgent at this time of year, Gill is not a rough weather camper (sadly).

Just go for it ghost, give yourself time and double check all your measurements, before starting. you'll be fine and Imagine how pleased you will be with the completed article... Oh and by the way it doesn't need to be lower, mine was flush with closed porta lid and never noticed the difference when using it. But why not have the front panel about an inch lower with no lip on lid and then you have a ventilated box. The Westie box i now have, has a lowered back panel acting as a vent (it has concertina type hinges on the side panels).

spotted this during an ebay search for a fridge? Don't know why it came in that search?
