looking at buying a van with a aaz conversion cylinder head gasket has gone ,whot additional work would be required to fit a 1y engine (caddy 1.9 diesal )would all mounts , exhaust manifold just swap over ,any other ideas please

if it JUST the head gasket then replace it - get the head tested and skimmed if necessary.
Otherwise consider a GTI conversion, between 27-33 mpg depensing how you drive it and the simplicty and power of a 115bhp petrol engine that will happliy rev and cruise at over 4K!

current drive is a 1.7 diesal 44 plus mpg,daily drive runs on 50/50 diesal veg oil looking for economy not performance

yup, every bit of tech literature I've read says that...
but I've never had an issues, plus why do VW sell different thicknesses of gasket?

Because of the slight variations in piston height due to manufacturing tolerances in crankshaft, conrods, smallends, thickness of top of piston, head - they all mount up.
