Hi folks, hopefully someone can shed some light on this? I have recently purchased a diesel transporter, the engine code is "1V 102 914". The Brick Yard guide suggests that this is a turbo diesel but I do not have a turbo on this engine?

I was assured it was a good runner (ebay) but it smokes badly (white smoke) and barely gets above walking pace, is it possible that someone has removed the turbo and fitted a non turbo exhaust or does the engine code denote a non turbo engine?

I am not sure whether to persevere with this engine or try and source a known good replacement, it would aid my decision if I know what I have to start off with.

Any help / suggestions appreciated.

Hi William, the 1V(eco-diesel) engine block is definatly turbo spec, mine is a 1V its in pieces in the loft at the moment. Because turbo engines run hotter than none turbo engines they have oil jets that squirt oil to the pistons to cool them inside the block, also there are small recesses in the piston skirts to allow clearance for said oil jets. So you have a turbo block on your hands.

Your cylinder head if it's the original one for your 1V will also have hydraulic tappets, these are said to be a plus as they are self adjusting and don't need messing with.

It would have also had/still have a catalytic converter.

Now from what i gather after refering to other forums the 1V diesel fuel pump is a none turbo pump and the injectors are not turbo spec either, that doesn't make sense but i think VW came up with the 1V to be quite kind on the environment it's not meant to be a performance turbo engine.

Heres a picture of a turbo pump, the cylindrical thing to the far right of the foto is an LDA, if your pump doesn't have this then it's a none turbo pump.

If your injectors are turbo spec they should open at 155bar, none turbo 130bar. They might be worth checking.

If your turbo is missing(same experince my self with previous engine ) and you don't have a turbo pump or injectors, maybe it's not cost effective to fix up what you have now if your really after a turbo spec van.

Maybe an 1.9 AAZ conversion would be the way to go, i've never done one but it seems like a very popular swap from a 1.6(T)D
