golf engine

hi i have read about the gti,tdi engines but was wondering if a standard mk2 1.6 or 1.8 petrol would be okay to use with my 1.9 petrol panel van 1988 model or arnt these powerfull enough.and would they still have the agg engine code on them dispite not being a gti engine,cheers dave
