i have a rm122 fridge 12v/gas only

so i had the idea of buying a 240v to 12v convert to run the fridge of mains when on hook up
so for it to work i put a 12v cigarette lighter socket on the 2 wires going to the element and connected into the transformer it blew the 3a fuse so put a 10a fuse in and the thing melted

the fuse was still in contact but just wondering if the socket was not man enough and i should get one designed to take more amps

or if im just barking up the wrong tree all together

the element is 75 watt i beleive so just wondering what amp that would need? as i have seen a 8 amp socket on ebay

75 watts is 6 1/4 Amps.

It sounds like your wiring and fuse carrier arnt up to the job.
Remember that the 12v circuit is on all the time, so any wiring or joints need to be really good.
On gas the thermostat will control the fridge temperature, the thermostat doesnt work on 12v
A few folk on here have asked about powering a 12v fridge from the mains, have a search,
The general answer is why bother, the 12v is for keeping stuff cold when driving and the gas is for camping.

There isn't a thermostat on the RM122, unless you mean the flame 'size' selector switch (1, 2 or 3) which controls the amount of heating and resultant cooling.

so looking at it a 8amp socket would work i know there is a conversion kit for the rm122 to convert to 240v but can find one any wear

just dont fancy running gas at night

i could invest in a new 12/240 fridge but being a tight ass as i need to save for a propex for winter

My fridge only gets cool (not freezing) after running on 12v (whilst driving) after 2 or 3 hours. On gas it freezes the ice cube shelf after less than 60 minutes. Why don't you connect up a battery to the fridge to see how cold it gets after a few hours before splashing out on sockets & voltage adaptors. You'll probably find the fridge stays colder overnight if you run it on gas for an hour or two below going to sleep than trying to run it on 12v all night. I normally keep a couple of freezer blocks in mine to help keep the temperature down when its switched off.
Why are you worried about running on gas over-night? Were you planning on using the Propex overnight or just before you go to sleep?

My fridge would freeze yer nuts off after 3 hours on 12v while driving

its a 30 year old fridge just dont wanna risk running at night may even invest in a 12v/240 one

the propex is newer and hopefully up to the new gas regs so have a little more trust but still wont run at night lol
