Since owning one of the afore mentioned converted VW Transporters I am finding it difficult to know a bit more about what details are available or user manuals etc.

I have most bits of information for fridge, Zig unit,but I have no information at all regarding the Fresh water tank, It was only earlier today I found where this item was fitted inside the van. ( Below a storage cupboard next to the so-called wardrobe, all most in line with the bench seat).

What I want to know is, How do I clean it out ? and does anyone know how much it is likely to hold .

It is an inboard tank with an external lockable filler, it is not underslung like a westy.

If you can help, please let me know,,,,,,,,

Hi Fritz - have a n 87 westy and the water tank is inboard installed in a similar style to yours. Our bus had been standing for over 7 years so the water left in the tank, yup they left it in there, was a whole little ecosystem.

Ours has a drain plug under the van so I removed that and started by pouring boiling water through the tank to remove mnost of the crud.

I replaced the drain cap and then put a kettle full of boiling water into the tank and ran through the tap.

I then drained the whole thing again.

After this I filled 3/4 full and added purification powder from Towsure (esp for water tanks).

This I left in for a few days and pootled around, regularly pulling water through the tap.

I have repeated the latter process 3 times and swapped the pump and pipes.

Since then we have run at leat three taks of fresh through to get rid of the chemical smell.

Have not tried drinking the water from the system yet but will do shortly.

Hope this helps - if you need the name of the chemical I can go ferkle around in the garage for you, just let me know.

Me again - kinda crap response from me really so went to get chemical name:

Puriclean 50g tub (sufficient) is £4.50 from Towsure and is mail order from www.towsure.com

you could also use some steriliser call sdp available from morrisons or a home brew shop type place!

i have one of these, just keep filling it as there is an overflow which comes out over the rear o/s wheel...(ribbed plastic) any thing else bout the conversion, just ask...

Be careful using Milton in metal tanks, it eats 'em!

milton is not good for drinking water, it is ok for washing babies bottles where you fill with other gloop but not suffient for camper water tanks, and as said above it eats metal ..... like your pump, tap and the tank if its not plastic......

puriclean as said above is the stuff to use, it was designed for the job on marine applications.

the tank should be black plastic, with inlet on top left side, and exit on bottom corner.. (overflow is on the top right as you look at it with your back towards the cab)
have never used mine for 'fresh drinking water' because of the obvious probs.. good for wash water and tea mind.
(keep a drinking one in the cuboard above to save any grief)

I will do exactly as some of you suggest regarding the cleaning of the tank,,,,,I agree it will only be used for the washing up/brewing up as our lot are getting fussy about what they drink straight from a tap.

I'll just have to fill the bugger up and measure what I put in, as I only wanted to know how much it was likely to hold and how much weight it would add to the van.

As far as added weight goes Fritz, 1 litre of water weighs 1kg.
