Hi
My engine is getting very hot, most times on short journeys runs at 3/4 of the guage , sometimes full and red flashing light etc..
i have had new thermostat, new long hoses from front to back. i am not sure that the expansion bottle is doing its job, as i sometimes see expelled water on the floor under the main bottle area.
any ideas?
i will try radflush to see if there is any blockage etc..maybe an air lock?
any help appreciated
regards
Chappers

Have you checked that you are rotating the water pump the correct way? Did you check the direction when you converted it?

Look for a little arrow on the edge of the pump where the two halves join above the shaft - my clockwise pump has the arrow there indicating the direction but two anticlockwise ones don't have an arrow.
I don't know that this is common to all pumps. The only certain way is to take it off and check which way the impeller faces. All Vw engines rotate clockwise so the direction that the belt takes around the water pump pulley governs which way it runs.

Is the rad getting hot?

It won't if the pump is rotating the wrong way. I know from experience as I had an anticlockwise pump on a clockwise pulley system!!! (Done by someone else I hasten to add)

For info, radiator not getting very hot.tried lifting front and bleeding it from bleed screw, pure water coming out.
Try it tomorrow and see how it goes, bloody annoying. Waited seven months to get it back from spray bay and it starts overheating

Lift the back.
It's the only way I could clear the air lock in my aaz.
It says nothing of this in the wilki but I read something baxter said about if anything raising the back is better than raising the front, straight away the level in the coolant tank went down and the rad started getting hot.
Have you got any ramps?
This all happened to me about two weeks ago. Have you replaced the water pump, and if so where did you get it?

Mine was up to 3/4 and overheating with the wrong pump - correct pump and it sits just over the led and no overheating.

Right on the LED.
Won't be water pump then.
I recon it's an air lock, In the end I disconnected the pipes from the rad so it was completely empty then filled it up with the rear on ramps, and it's been fine since.

Have you had this problem since January when the water pump was replaced,or only since new thermostat and btf pipes?
What belt set up have you got JX or AAZ?
If AAZ does your belt run the ribs or smooth side on the waterpump pulley?

You will still need to know which way the pump SHOULD rotate irrespective of what belt setup is on there at present!
