Hi all

I havent used my van for about a month now as been welding her again, previous to my not using it everything was in good working order .

Got her back together yesterday as had to go pick up a table for the wife.

Now with the stereo on I'm getting engine noise coming through the speakers If you get what I mean (ie a tone that increases/decreases with the engines speed ).

I can remember getting this many years ago on cars of the eightys and it was cured with a in-line suppressor of some sort .

Anybody got any thoughts?

The bit thats baffling me is that it was all fine and had been working with out this noise for bout 5 . The only thing thats really changed recently is I got round to fitting the aerial to the body work rather than have it laying across the dash.

IIRC you need to fit a filter to the aerial. I had this issue on my first car when i fitted a new stereo but i'm talking 15 years ago so can't remember exactly what i did. Google it, i'm sure it's a simple fix.

I remember it being quite common when all me mates had mk3 escorts , only really the aeriel thats changed recently so I spose it points to that really , think ill try disconnecting it see if that makes a differance

If the noise is a whining sound that gets louder as the engines RPMs increase.
The aerial doesn't need a filter the radio just needs earthing properly.

Thats confirmed another of my my thoughts I have some extra ventilation holes round the front screen which leak onto the earth crowns, the vans stood with some recent heavy down pours, so a earth clean wouldnt go a miss. Halfords have got a alternator suppressor/filter reduced to 50p so going to get one of them to just to try to but will clean earths first.

As I mentioned never had any problems till I stopped using the van .

One thing has led to another and the van may be layed up for the winter now anyway but want to cure this problem before I do .

Hi all

well Im now using me van as me daily and finally got round to looking into this problem a bit more. I disconnected the wiring to the alternator and it cured the problem partially ( still a bit of noise but the bluewire was still connected as it wouldnt undo) I didnt take off the alternator belt as I didnt like the idea of running the van without the water pump .

What are me options to cure the problem I can live with it but on the other hand it is annoying, Ive googled suppressors but cant seem to get a definate answer

Have you got a shield around your dizzy cap ? It is fitted to stop interference through your radio...

It could be that now the aerial is properly earthed through the bodywork it is getting a better signal and picking up the interference from the distributor.

OK..here are a few.

Poor earth connection to the radio
Poor earth connection on the aerial...and I mean the mounting bracket that bites into the bodywork.
Routing of wiring to the radio.
Suppression on the alternator/plug leads
Earth leads generally
What kind of aerial is it? loaded? powered base?

Ive re-cleaned all the earths for the radio and the amps, Ive dis-connected the aerial as it was useless anyway , so its time to try a alternator suppressor and/or dizzy cap .

wish Id found it sooner to a electrical Luddite to me its answered a lot of questions lol.

from reading this and the fact its isolated to the amp for the front speakers , coupled with the fact the rca lead im using for the front amp is cack . Gonna try a better quality one from the house stereo and if that cures it .
