Starter motor

Since sailsbury the Starter motor seems to be not disengaging, I'm getting that horrible noise like when you turn the key accidently before the engine has stopped.
Is this due to dirt, mud ect or just a coincidence?

Sure I read somewhere about starter motors playing up after off roading. :?
Will get it off tomorrow and investigate, have also got a new ignition switch just in case.

Also has anyone tried the ATP ones on eBay(starter)?
They are £40 cheaper than brickwerks, but if theyr'e crap then they're crap.

How do Rob.

I can only speak in my limited experience of off road driving that starter motors, especially the petrol ones like on the doka are not that keen on getting wet. I must have put four second hand ones on the doka and every time they got wet they did what yours is doing and it has happened a couple of times on the Westy but the beauty being that on the Westy it takes 40 minutes and on the doka it takes three hours

I bit the bullet after the AAZ went in and I got a new one fitted from GSF and it was bang on and never let me down until I filled the engine with water and tried to start it and it shattered on the casting. I got another new one from GSF when the TDI went in and thats been good as gold too even after that really deep stuff last weekend.

Hope this helps

hi Rob
if you are buying on ebay then this seller
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Electrostart2006" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
is the way to go, based in daventry ,one of the few ebay sellers that actually have a shop that you can physically walk in too and one of the most straight up blokes i know (also my brother-in-law), im trying at the moment to get him on the discounts page,
if what you need is`nt listed then give him a ring
not just starters and alternators but anything autoelectrical
:ok

Rob, for what it's worth - when we left you on sat my starter was so clarted up that it could only manage a dull groan on key turn , Nick had to kit the key continuously until it started moving a tooth at a time, just as I thought about rounding up a bump start party it turned. Has repeated this a couple of times since , bracing myself for it to let go soon. They can be refurbed tho

Fixed it......
I dismantled it and gave it a clean, all working fine for the time being. :ok

Couldn't believe the state of the engine bay though.

Whats the best way to clean it?
I was going to sort out my dodgy glow plug but thought better of it until its cleaned.
Would it be ok to stick a jet wash in there?

My engine bay was same! Gaffa tape round dissy obviously worked :ok

Some of them ' sheepdips' were rather deep  All ok though apart from annoying 'disc squeak' on journey home
