He has the motor turning the input clockwise (viewed from the rear), and the ring gear on the left. Installed, the input turns CCW and ring gear is on the right. So it's upside down in the video, if flipped it would spin the right way, but the shifter mechanism would have to be moved to the top. He shows how the front cover bolt pattern is symmetrical so it can be flipped, I'm assuming the rear cone is the same and if so it could be installed normally in a Syncro and it would drive forward.
I like the idea. I'm assuming he did away with the VC, maybe he's using a locking diff hub assembly as his coupling, which would be far more robust than the VW decoupler.
