Usually just a large nut on the back.

Ummm... It's the green illuminated type, sure that there's no nut, I can almost get it out but it's got a bigger piece on a kind of piggy back behind which won't fit through the hole!!!

I've one of them that I put in the back of my van - the green plastic part is put in first as it has the extra bit for the bulb then the metal part is pushed into the plastic. So just push the metal piece out first - it is all just an interference fit with each piece on these ones.

The push fit ones are OK in something like chipboard/ply but for thin metal you need the ones that have the nut on the reverse (sometimes it is a metal shroud that acts as a nut that doubles as a heat shield for when it is used as a cigarette lighter).

Thanks for the help guys... Mr oldie your quite correct in that this type is not best suited to the tin dash!! With the help of a scalpel I managed to trim down the green plastic enough to pull it out using the kitchen knife taper to pull the metal ring away from the green platic..... Gotcha
