Ive been without my van for over 3 weeks now! Why is it that Ive been seeing so many bays and T25s while Ive been in my dads car?? Grrrrr!!!! If I wave from a BMW the driver of the van will just think Im some sort of looney! Granted they wouldnt be far wrong but anyway. So yeah, my mechanic has my gearbox out now. The crankshaft pilot bearing went on the engine and took out the clutch in the process. In the end the flywheel jammed and the engine wouldnt even turn. Luckily somehow this happened when the engine was off. I think the starting motor bendix got stuck or something. The mechanic said that it was just as well the clutch went, otherwise the bottom end of the engine could have been irrepairably damaged, meaning new engine time. Now why would this bearing go on a (1.6 TD syncro) van thats been looked after and doesnt have huge mileage on it?

Ill be getting my van back tomorrow anyway so Im looking forward to that. Ill be taking her for a nice long drive and waving at every T25, bay and split I see! Im so glad I didnt attempt this repair myself. It would have been so over my head.

bearing may have been damaged during a clutch change perhaps ?

They just collapse, I see it fairly regularly. Just one of those things.
It's when they lock up and it feels like the clutch isn't totally disengaging it usually gets mis diagnosed as a faulty clutch.
Thing is, it usually manifests itself as a oil leak from the bellhousing, the bearing collapses, the shaft wobbles, the seal wears and the oil drops out, usually onto your clutch.
Catch 'em early!

I should have gone by the grating noise I was getting. See thread from a couple of months back entitled "grating sound coming from drivetrain" to see what Im talking about. Yeah it did feel like the clutch wasnt properly disengaging. The thing is, the clutch pressure plate was badly scored according to the mechanic. Ill be collecting it tomorrow now due to a delay on parts. They have the part in now though and the box is back in but they didnt have time to reconnect the driveshafts. So an hour tomorrow will see it finished. Im working tomorrow though so it will be after hours when I collect it. Theyre nice that way. Ill keep you all posted!

DITTO!!!

Looking forward to taking it out and testing my new running gear this weekend - decoupler + front diff now fully operational...

Whose betting that with my new found confidence I go and get stuck somewhere and need to get towed out by a tractor!

Parked outside McDonalds no doubt. I was sound engineering in the Kingston hotel for the festival of world cultures. Great gig that. But yeah, over €650 is what I paid for the job. I doubt I would have gotten it done cheaper elsewhere though.

Getting back to the original thread........I've been without use of my Syncro now for exactly 10 1/2 weeks.........God I miss my van.........I'm really fed up with the Transit.......plus, PLUS, I wouldn't have to spend best part of 2 days cleaning my van top to toe when I returned from wherever.......
