Plastic Wheel trim cleaning

On my signifcant other car a Rover 45
the slots in the front plastic wheel trims have baked on dark brown gunge which will not come off despite using concentrated Flash, Turps, Meths and Cellulose thinners although the latter helped a bit with vigorous scrubbing with a tooth brush. As they are original complete with badge I would like to keep them. They are silver paint so can't use paint stripper. Any thoughts apart from painting over slots with aluminium paint or searching scrap yards for rear wheel trims which don't seem to build dirt up.
