Elusive diesel engine code

I have been advised that what was sold as a JX turbo diesel engine in our multivan is actually a golf engine.
I am trying too find the engine code to verify this but can't spot it.
I have looked at the wiki and the helpful picture there but just can't suss it out.
I guess it might be covered in gunk but being mechanically ignorant still not sure if I'm looking in the right spot...
Can anybody help with an idiot proof guide to locating it?
Thanks!

Look below 3rd and 4th injector on the block (not the head), underneath the water hoses is a machined flat (looks completely flat with none of the rough look of the rest of the block). The number is stamped there (not embossed). Very difficult to see - I have a block on an engine stand at the present and it still took me 1/4 hour to decipher it looking at all angles with a torch and being able to get very close to it with magnifying glasses on.

Great thanks for that, really helpful.
I'm sure I've found the spot now but the code I've managed to decipher (so far) looks like...
SB 2C/103 ?
Nothing like the codes on the wiki... I think I'll get to rubbing/cleaning the spot a bit more tomorrow...

SB is a golf engine 1.6td with an intercooler, if the cooler is still fitted it will give 80bhp. quite a sought after engine, and nothing to worry about, nice little upgrade

Brilliant, thanks for that link!
I'm sure I've looked at that at some point in my search to find/understand this code business...
Will have another rub/scrub tomorrow to be sure...
So, my next question is how do I tell if it still has the cooler on it?

find the inlet manifold and follow the pipe back to the turbo. If there is a intercooler fitted inbetween (looks like a small radiator) then you have one. If its just a pipe all the way to the turbo, then you dont.

Im running an SB using an intercooler from a saab 900 in the N/s rear. it works very well.
Loads of info knocking about including one or two nice shiny rebuilds.
